Ikwa Ozu - Igbo Funeral

In Igbo culture, a funeral is more than a farewell; it is a celebration of a life well-lived, a tribute to legacy, and a profound gathering of family and community. This series, a part of my Archiving Igbo Joy project, captures these deeply emotional and vibrant ceremonies, where sorrow mingles with joy as we honour our loved ones and embrace the continuity of life.

Returning to my village for these occasions, I’m reminded of how Igbo funerals transcend mourning—they are filled with unity, the sharing of memories, the sending forth of blessings for a peaceful journey to the other side. I document the rituals that define these ceremonies, the colorful garments worn in tribute symbolize respect and celebration.

These moments, filled with strength of kinship, are a testament to our resilience and unity. In every photograph, I aim to capture not just the grief, but the laughter, storytelling, and dancing that accompany the remembrance of a loved one’s journey. Igbo Funerals reflects the beauty of a community united in remembrance, showing how we Igbos find joy, honor, and love even in times of loss.
